Families are getting a tricky business now. I would understand if you said its your grand parents and kids or your cousins and uncles all in the same family and you want an MPV but now MPVs mean even small families can have them. Its probably like in your house every kid wants a room and in a car every kid wants a row of seat to himself.
Duh! Is that why a small family wants a MPV?
Partly yes but also because third row of seats mean ample luggage space when tumbled and folded and spacious interiors mean chuck the train, here’s my M P V, floor the pedal and you are out on highway to one of your favourite vacation destinations. Privacy, check, comfort, check, stopping wherever you want, wherever you like, check, fun, check, space for massive luggage bags, check. Thus MPV becomes ideal.
So the deal is expensive then?
Not any more. Spend something more than 5 and less than 10 and you have plethora of MPVs fitting your budget. India just witnessed the launch of the Ertiga which starts at 5 Lacs ballpark and Chevy’s Enjoy is soon hitting the floor, so is Nissan’s Evalia.
What describes a conventional MPV?
MPV is not an SUV, so its not going to be sporty or fun to look at. You would loath them at the first sight. Boxy demeanor is the first thing one notices. The company gets the best brains on board and tells them, ‘look we want something that looks outrageous but should have loads of space, three rows of seating, thoughtful features and competitive price’.
Right! But Ertiga still looks decent
Yes because Maruti hasn’t gone all out and tried something new. It’s the Swift with extension and so it is shorter relative to other MPVs, about 250 cms shorter. Its not a perfect 7 seater like the Innova but its just a spacious Van with stuffed third row, Maruti was clear from the beginning that it wanted a car with space and that’s it!
Err! How about Enjoy and Evalia? Are they vehicles worth waiting for?
Now Evalia is an interesting vehicle. More than the Ertiga, I think it is Evalia that is all geared up to be at Innova’s throat. In fact it has an independent derivative to match steps with Innova’s presence in the commercial domain. Evalia wants to give Toyota a run for its money when it comes to being a call centre cabie or ferrying guests to and from hotels. The Stile is what Evalia’s commercial twin will be called and will be developed and marketed by Ashok Leyland, under their JV. If looks are the sole criterion, Evalia has lost the game to Innova, Evalia is typically soap-case like whereas the Innova has got the popular cab forward design which makes it look much less in your face.
The Nissan’s Evalia gets the Sunny powerhouse, a 1.5 litre turbo diesel engine whereas the Ashok Leyland’s Stile gets the Verito’s (earlier known as Logan) mitochondria 1.5 liter diesel engine.
Chevy’s Enjoy is another very straight design, no subtle curves on the body but that of course maximizes the inner space and that’s all why Chevy expects you to enjoy the Enjoy.
The Enjoy will first be launched with a 94.6bhp 1.4-litre petrol, but will get a 1.3-litre SDE diesel.
Did you say they are not worth waiting for?
They are, because according to the media speculations, they will carry very humble price tags and if they cannot beat the unfathomable Innova, they will undercut it. Both the MPVs are expected to be priced at Rs. 7 Lacs ballpark. The Evalia’s got sliding doors, the Enjoy is to get normal hinged ones.
What is the Evalia and Enjoy’s launch date in India?
Sometime by the end of 2012 both the MPVs should hit the Indian roads. The respective companies are desperate to give the consummate Innova which has just come back with a nip and tuck, sleepless nights and also will not let the now new Ertiga mature in the Indian market. But can the nightmares be a reality, that we’ll leave it to you, dear buyer!
